Brent Lodge winter update
Over the winter months the hospital space is mainly filled with underweight hedgehogs and sick, injured or orphaned pigeons and water birds. Pigeons can breed all year round so the team does see plenty of babies throughout the year, but in harsh winter conditions squabs can be blown out of their shelters and sustain injuries. At this time of year, they will also see an increase in swans - juvenile swans are ‘chased’ out of their parents' territories and often find themselves in silly situations.
The hospital is currently treating 2 swans who came in covered head to toe in discarded fuel. On admission the animal care staff washed them with warm soapy water to remove the fuel. They are being tube fed with a charcoal solution to absorb any toxins they ingested during preening. The younger one of the two is much weaker and has a solid mass on its wing. Thankfully, it does not appear to be anything sinister, but will need to be investigated further. Brent Lodge’s new patient recovery shed will provide an ideal environment for the first few weeks of their recovery before they are moved to an outside enclosure. They both have a long road to recovery ahead, but we have everything crossed for their safe return to the wild.
The aftermath of recent storms, rain and strong winds have played a part in an increase in the amount of discarded waste washed up on shorelines – fishing line, rope, plastics, PPE and pollutants can cause nasty injuries. The harbours and marinas are always well maintained in order to protect and enhance wildlife, but if you do find any discarded waste please safely pick it up or report it to the Harbour Office.
If you do discover a wild animal in need please give us a call, we are more than happy to help. Our new mobile-friendly website offers plenty of advice, so if you are out and about you have help and advice readily available at your fingertips. www.brentlodge.org T: 01243 641672
